Hand Braided Horse Hair Mecates
These mecates are a little different that what you see most places, but after years of riding hackamore horses I can say without a doubt that I prefer them to any other. Of course they're made from mane hair, but rather than using 6 strands and a core, like most you'll see, these have only four stands, and no core. |
We've also minimized the white hairs as much as we could, because in my experience they are the stiffer hairs. My favorite mecates have always been darker ones. I just like the way they feel in my hand better, and where the cores can get stiff if they get damp, these will always have a nice feel to them. The size you use is just a matter of what feels best in your hands.
1/2-Inch Diameter $75.00

5/8-Inch Diameter $85.00

Climbing Rope Mecates
If you're going to be out working in a bosal all day or might need to tie a horse at some point, these Climbing Rope Mecates are a good thing to have. |

Even the softest hair rope is going to get to your hands after a day in the saddle, and you sure don't want to have to tie one with your best horsehair! So sometimes these are just good to have around.

Hand-Made Tibetan Yak Hair Mecates
Hand-made in the Kham region of Tibet, home of their greatest horsemen!
We were so impressed with all the things the Tibetans made from Yak hair we just had to see how it would work for a mecate. The results are sensational! The ropes are soft with a great feel and strong as can be. Once you ride with one we don't think you'll ever ride with a horse hair one again. Also, doesn't loose it's feel if it gets wet like mohair does.
